Making Play-doh

Yesterday Noah and I made play-doh. We used the following basic recipe and it turned out great. I know there are so many variations but I thought we should try the basic one to begin with. Noah will sit for over an hour just playing with his new green play-doh (he pretends it's a robot.) He doesn't even need any cookie cutters or play-doh "toys." Oh the joy of simple things!

Play-doh Recipe
3 cups flour
1 cup salt
6 tsp cream of tarter (found in the spice aisle)
3 cups water
2 tablespoons oil (they recommend vegetable oil but I used canola)
Food coloring

Pour water and salt into large saucepan. Add oil, flour, cream of tarter and then food coloring. Cook for about five minutes. Make sure to keep mixing it. Take it out of the pan and knead the dough for a few minutes.

This play-doh will last up to 3 months if kept sealed. I used a ziploc bag and an airtight container to ensure the freshness of our new play-doh.

  1. Way to go! I keep thinking this is a project I should do with Brady and just have never quite gotten the motivation up to do it.
